Applying to MALS

Applying to MALS requires submission of the online application of the Duke University Graduate School. MALS application requirements differ from the Graduate School in several respects, however. Be sure to follow MALS application instructions to ensure proper and complete application and avoid mistakes that may delay consideration of your file.

Application Instructions Overview

The application process requires submitting your application online.

Required materials:
  • Online application form
  • An essay in which you describe how the MALS program can meet your intellectual and/or educational goals, and experiences and abilities that you can bring to the program (this can be uploaded into the application or mailed to the Graduate School with other supporting documents)
  • $75 non-refundable application fee [by credit card at time of online submission (preferred) or check or money order along with supporting documents]
  • Two letters of recommendation (mailed) - Application to the Graduate Liberal Studies program requires two letters of recommendation that describe your academic ability and motivation. Ideally, your referees can speak knowledgeably about your academic skills and promise as a graduate student.
    Note:
    We strongly recommend that you use academic referees. If this is not possible, choose your referees from among individuals with whom you have a formal relationship such as an employer or supervisor. Personal friends and family members are not acceptable as referees for your application.
  • Official, confidential transcripts (mailed)
  • A curriculum vitae including academic background, professional and volunteer activity, and relevant experience (mailed or uploaded into the online application).
Application deadlines:
  • Fall admission
    • Electronic submission of application form by 5:00 pm EST on May 15
    • Submission of supporting documents postmarked no later than May 15
  • Spring admission
    • Electronic submission of application form by 5:00 pm EST on October 15
    • Submission of supporting documents postmarked no later than October 15
