Making a Gift to the Program
The 2007-2008 MALS Endowment Campaign

THE MALS ENDOWMENT
The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Endowment was initiated in 1993 by graduates of the MALS program. The purpose of the Endowment is to ensure that highly-qualified students can pursue interdisciplinary study in the MALS program at Duke University.

Income from the MALS Endowment generates awards in honor of Joyce B. Franke (MALS, 1984) and Diane Sasson (MALS Director, 1984-1999) and in memory of Linda Ironside (MALS, 1994) and Kim Wilson (MALS student, 1999-2001).

AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE
MALS strives to recognize and support the needs and talents of students who represent the ongoing vitality of the program. The MALS Endowment enables us to provide scholarship support each fall and spring semester to at least four new MALS students. Award recipients receive a one-time award from the interest generated by the Endowment.

These awards not only honor the contributions of the individuals for whom they are named, but they recognize the remarkable accomplishments and academic promise that each entering class brings to MALS.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
A decade after the Endowment was established, the need for scholarship support is greater than ever. Your generous support preserves the stability of the MALS program by guaranteeing that scholarship awards will be available over the long-term.

Contributions to the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program by check can be mailed to Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program, Attention: Margaret Dennis, Box 90095, Durham, NC 27708-0095. Credit card gifts can be made on-line at Duke's secure credit card site. Please remember to specify Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in the section marked Additional/Other designations.

Dear Friends,

As you know, our increasingly complex world challenges each of us to employ sophisticated critical thinking skills. The MALS degree is designed to prepare students to meet that challenge. It is also a degree that is uniquely supportive of the local community, as some eighty percent of our students are Triangle residents.

We are committed to offering the rich intellectual resources of the program and Duke University to our students regardless of financial means. Indeed, many of our students are studying with us thanks to the generosity of Graduate Liberal Studies students, graduates, faculty, and friends. We are especially proud of the support of our graduates who have contributed to the MALS Endowment Fund so that others may share in this innovative and valuable graduate education.

I appeal to you to join me in supporting the MALS Endowment Fund. All donations are used exclusively for the benefit of MALS students. Your gift, no matter the size, will nurture the GLS community, and in so doing, enrich our society with well-educated citizens able to confront the world with skills gained in a rigorous and interdisciplinary liberal education.

To those of you who have given in the past, my heartfelt thanks and request that you find the means to give again. To those who have not yet donated, please join the community of GLS supporters and give as generously as you can. And again, thank you for your support.

With warm wishes,
Donna Zapf, Ph.D.
