The MALS Program

Program Resources
MALS students have at their disposal a wide range of University and program resources.

Administrative Support
Because most MALS students have extensive career and family responsibilities, we make every effort to streamline administrative prodedures, to schedule classes and events at times conventient to working people, and to be sensitive to the constraints confronting part-time students.

The Writing Program
Many of our students have been away from academic work for some time, or have undergraduate training which included little or no academic writing experience. For this reason, we offer a writing program to assist students in developing the academic skills necessary for successful graduate study. The GLS Writing Consultant offers individual consultations with students during the evenings, as well as a series of writing workshops and seminars designed exclusively for MALS students.

Research Seminars
We also offer courses and seminars in academic research, including a tour of the Perkins Library and its resources.

The Library System
The Duke Library System consists of the William R. Perkins Library and seven other libraries on campus, in addition to the independently administered libraries in business, law, and medicine. Together, they house an impressive collection that is enhanced by reciprocal agreements with other area universities and through access to digital archives.

Cultural and Recreational Opportunities
Students become better acquainted with each other and with faculty through a variety of informal social functions, seminars, and discussions sponsored by the MALS program. In addition, campus lectures, plays and concerts provide a stimulating variety of enrichment opportunities. Campus athletic and recreational facilities are open to GLS students and add important dimensions to the GLS experience.

Graduate Liberal Studies House
The Graduate Liberal Studies House, at 2114 Campus Drive, offers student facilities as well as the administrative offices of the program. Students and alumni are invited to use the student lounge/library, as well as the seminar room for group meetings. The house is equipped with wireless access to the Internet and is a comfortable place to read, study, and meet. If weekend meetings are planned, call the GLS office and we will provide you with access.

Opportunities for Graduates
We value our alumni and keep them informed about the program through our newsletter, emails and invitations to social events. In addition, MALS alumni can audit our seminars or continue their studies through the GLS Advanced Studies Program. Graduates are also welcomed to use and enjoy the facilities of the GLS House.

[The MALS Degree]

MALS offers me the perfect complement to my years of professional training. The interdisciplinary curriculum allows me to explore a wide array of interests in a focused and rigorous manner. The synergism between excellent teachers and bright, motivated students makes each class an energizing and insightful experience.
